“Duo” is an ongoing collaboration between myself and Menghan Rex Jiang. For this collaboration, we perform improvised music. I perform with a hybrid electro-acoustic setup, involving an acoustic drum set and a MIDI controller. This controller both triggers sound file playback and digital synthesis. The sound files range from distorted percussive sounds that were created in SuperCollider, to sounds from a Behringer 808. These sounds are filtered in processed mainly through distortion, delays, and reverb. Rex will receive my acoustic drum set sound via one central microphone in the middle of the drum set. Rex then processes it using techniques such as spectral-freezing and feedback.
